Fuel Cell Install
I thought about the installation fora long time. Idid not want to mount it in the trunk. I wanted to build my own, since I am an aviation sheetmetal mechanic. Lately, I just did not have the time. A friend had the cell pictured, and gave it to me.
Cut It Out
Here I cut off what was left of the aft frame rails. After tack welding the new clip together, I finish welded the clip outside the car, and then welded the clip to the
Aft Clip
The "ears" are for mounting the rear bumper brackets. The large 1 inch holes near the ears are for the rear body mounts.
After Welding
Here is the rear clip sitting as it would, when installed in the car. The 1 X 1 steel stock will carry the fuel cell. I tucked the cell up as far as it could go between the rails, before it comes close to the trunk floor.
Done
I had an aircraft wing tank fill cap from the past that I installed on the cell. I deleted the original vent, and blanked it off with 2 plates. I added the vent on the Drivers Side with a bulkhead fitting. A hose will attach to this, and will be routed up into the left rear quarter panel.
Replacing Trunk Floor
Found some swirl polished .050 aluminum at work in the trash. I used it to fill in between the wheel tubs. Below is a pic of the cover for the vacuum pump and coil overs, which fills in the rest of the space in between the tubs.
